Edibles have quickly become one of the most popular ways for people to try and enjoy cannabis. They’re easy to ingest, and often, you’ll notice they have a much higher potency too. Which begs the question, what dosage should you focus on? How much is too much?

Here we shed some light on dosage and help you understand which amount is best, for which situations.

What factors influence edible dosage?

One of the things you will notice when it comes to edible dosage is the fact the recommended amount can vary from one person to another. Your metabolism, body weight and tolerance are all major factors that you need to keep in mind. Plus, the type of edible e.g., drinks, cookies, brownies, gummies, mints and so on. All of these can be vastly different from one another, making it even harder to narrow down just how much you are supposed to consume.

That’s why it’s recommended to look at the dosage inside the edible, rather than the size of it itself.

How many THC mg should you eat to feel high?

Researchers have narrowed down on dosing as medicine and advise that new users start on an amount of anything up to, or around, 2.5mg of THC.

Their studies show that if you eat anything up to 2.5 mg THC, you will have mild relief from anxiety, stress, and pain with a very low risk of Euphoria. It can also boost your creativity, but keep in mind that this is mostly for regular microdose consumers or first-time users.

Here’s what you can expect as you increase in dose:

  • If you go up to 5 mg THC, you have stronger pain relief, yet at this point, it can already alter your perception and coordination. It’s more suitable for those that use it very often recreationally.
  • When the dosage is increased to 10 mg THC, you can encounter major perception and coordination issues, as well as experience euphoric effects. 10 mg would be the dosage recommended for those that have a high tolerance to THC.
  • If you go up to 20 mg THC, then the euphoric effects are extremely strong, with perception and coordination being severely altered. This is only suitable for those persons that have a very high THC tolerance or a low GI absorption. 20mg is considered a good dose for recreational purposes.

What is the recommended dosage for a first-time user?

If you’re new to cannabis and want to try out edibles, the 2.5 mg THC is a great starting point. 5 mg would be one dose, so 2.5 mg is just half a dose. It’s important to keep in mind that many edibles come in 10 or 5 mg doses, so you might have to cut the edible into smaller pieces.

We recommend starting with the lowest amount that you can, and then slowly increasing the dosage as needed.

The length that the effects last will be based on the dosage you consume. If you’re a regular consumer, 5mg can last anywhere from 2 to 3 hours. However, if you have a higher tolerance, that might wear off in an hour or two. Experimentation is key here, but you always want to start off with a really low amount and then slowly increase the dosage.

Eventually, you will reach a point where you can feel your tolerance breaking, and that’s where you want to stop. When trying new products, always remember – safety first.

If you’re unsure of the recommended dosage, get in touch with the manufacturer/supplier of the product directly before you take it. You can also reach out to Cannabis research and support groups in your area to speak with medical professionals and patients that have tried edible products for similar reasons.
