If you’ve ever used or researched a CBD product, you’ve most likely come across the terms ‘full spectrum’ and ‘broad-spectrum’. Labelled on the bottle, these terms are used to describe the strength and components of the CBD – and there’s more to them than you’d first think.

In order to identify which product can not only deliver your desired result but also the most value over time, it’s important to grasp how the differences can (and will) affect you.

What is the main difference between full and broad-spectrum CBD?

Full-spectrum CBD has a variety of different cannabis plant components, including some THC. But don’t worry, any full-spectrum CBD products won’t have anything more than 0.3% THC in them, or even 0.2% in Australia and New Zealand. On the other hand, broad-spectrum doesn’t contain any form of THC. These products are typically known as not being ‘CBD pure’ as they also include other cannabis plant components.

The pros and cons of broad-spectrum CBD

One of the main benefits of broad-spectrum CBD is the fact that there’s no THC. You don’t need to worry about any psychoactive effect, which is extremely important to take into consideration. It also has some important cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes, so you can access some great health benefits.

The downside is that CBD without any THC is often not as effective, and the extraction process to eliminate THC may reduce the amount of other beneficial compounds. So even if you can access effects like pain relief, those won’t be as powerful when compared to full-spectrum CBD for example.

The pros and cons of full-spectrum CBD

The most common benefit of using Full Spectrum is something known as, “the entourage effect”. When you have multiple cannabis compounds working together, the benefits are much better, the combination of health benefits is incredible, and the results have been known to come in much faster. Having recently grown in popularity, there are also more ways than ever to consume full spectrum CBD, which is incredible for patient access.

The downside? Some people are put off by the inclusion of THC, fearing that they will experience a high.

Ask the Professionals – which should I use?

With a lack of authorised public information and CBD products rising in popularity, it can be difficult to cut through the noise and choose the right product for you, so we asked the professionals for you.

MCANZ (Medical Cannabis Awareness NZ) Founder Shane Le Brun states that while purified isolates and broad-spectrum CBD can be used for various common pains, full-spectrum CBD is known to have the greatest results.

“Suppliers are aware of the fear around THC which is why products are limited to only contain a specific amount. If used as directed by a health professional, the user should not feel any high and would still receive the full suite of benefits”
